The AA recommended today that all British drivers should check their car insurance policy gives them comprehensive cover abroad before driving in Europe.

Under EC law motorists that have their car insured in the UK will be covered for the minimum level of insurance required in the country they are driving in, but their insurance may not necessarily stretch any further.

Ian Crowder, public relations manager at AA, said that while some insurers will provide up to 90 days free comprehensive cover anywhere in Europe, others may charge extra and some will not provide comprehensive cover on the continent at all.

He advised drivers to check their policies carefully to avoid being caught out when abroad.

The RAC Foundation reports that three million Brits head to the continent in their cars, vans and motor-homes by ferry and the channel tunnel every year.

It has also found that UK drivers who take to the roads in Spain or Portugal, popular holidays destinations for British holidaymakers, are three times more likely to be involved in a fatal accident than at home.
